Water Purification and Recycling

In the late 1990s, we got involved in a project that was funded by Lucent technologies to expand the capabilities of SuperPro Designer and make it capable of modeling, evaluating, and optimizing ultrapure water production processes for the semiconductor industries. Along with that, we included capabilities for evaluating water recycling and reuse option. As part of that project we implemented several new unit operation/procedure models: Ion Exchange (for water demineralization), Activated Carbon Adsorption (specific to liquid streams), UV Radiation, and Degasification. Improvements were made in the membrane and granular media filtration units having in mind the requirements for modeling water purification processes. Further, a new component and stream property was added to calculate and track the hardness of water expressed in equivalent CaCO3.

Engineers in the microelectronics industries can now use SuperPro to design semiconductor fabrication facilities with minimal wastewater discharge. The figure below shows a simplified flowsheet of the steps involved in making ultrapure water, contaminating it with sulfuric and nitric acid in the fabrication plant, and then treating it (physical treatment) before its discharge into a POTW. Click here to download a detailed paper on the subject.

Our users in industry and academia have also used SuperPro to model and evaluate water treatment and recycling options in a number of other industries, such as Pulp and Paper, Electric Utilities, Wineries, Beverage Production, as well as for municipalities.
